United Left Alliance sweeps Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union election polls.
The results of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union (JNUSU) polls were declared on 16th September 2018. N Sai Balaji has been elected as the President, Sarika Chaudhary as the Vice President, Aejaj Ahmed as the General Secretary and Amutha Joydeep as the Joint Secretary.
Presidential candidate N Sai Balaji represented United Left Alliance, a coalition of four parties namely, All India Student’s Association (AISA), Democratic Student’s Federation (DSF), Student Federation of India (SFI) and All India Student’s Federation (AISF). It was a major victory for the United Left Alliance since all four major posts were won their candidates. N Sai Balaji maintained a steady lead eventually bagging, 2151 votes. Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) candidate Lalit Pandey came second with 972 votes followed BAPSA, RJD and NSUI.
The post of Vice President was won Sarika Chaudhary who defeated ABVP’s Geeta Sri 1,579 votes. For the post of General Secretary and Joint Secretary, Aejaj Ahmed got 2,423 votes while Amutha got 2,047 respectively.
Speaking of his loss in Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union polls, ABVP’s presidential candidate, Lalit Pandey said that they are taking the results as a win. “This is the win of our will. The United Left Alliance had to form a coalition just to defeat us. They had to come together to fight us”, he said.
Presidential candidate, N Sai Balaji asserted that the United Left Alliance will fight against fund cuts and seat cuts if they won the election. “The people who accuse JNU of harbouring anti-national sentiments are themselves working against the country”, he further added.
This year, Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union election witnessed a voter turnout of 67.8%, which is the highest in six years. In 2016, the voting percentage was 59%, 55% in 2015 and 60% in 2012.
The counting of votes for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union election was halted for almost 14 hours on Saturday due to “forcible entry” and “attempts to snatch away ballot boxes”, the election authorities cited. Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s students accused the election authorities of being biased towards the United Left Alliance and threatened to move the courts. ABVP-JNU unit President Vijay Kumar alleged that the counting process was not being carried out according to the mentioned rules and regulations, questioning the authority’s neutrality.
